Flash shots, well-lit scenes and fully black frames are rejected; a person must still make out the subject. Contributors are worldwide, strongest in Southeast Asia, the United States and Europe, on many phones; capture is in-app, so camera-roll imports are excluded. There are no illumination labels; the set doubles as a stress test for detectors trained on well-lit imagery. Many low-light datasets are synthetic darkening of daytime images or a few hundred frames from one camera; unedited dark imagery at this scale is unusual, though each phone's night-mode processing is whatever that device applied.
